But as someone said before, it really depends on playstyle and also the situation you are in. Smelting down weapons is a great way to increase your smithing skill and gain materials to forge new weapons. Refining materials: At the smithy you can also refine materials. Using the refine tab you can create charcoal by using 2 hardwood to begin with. Charcoal is important for forging new weapons and smelting down old ones.
So i think a really long Romphalia, Schyte/Naginata/Glaive, Voulge, Bill type weapons are better because they will let you swing. Menvalion could be used also but you said you have 2h axe and normal Menvalion (not fine steel, which has very inferior swing damage) has similar reach with 2handed axes.
